Empowerment Clubs ZanaA has also initiated Empowerment Groups throughout schools in Kibera conducted by a corps of Junior Field Officers, High School Graduates from Kibera and Kawangware. ZanaA is mentoring these five youth, who are in turn mentoring Primary and Secondary school students ages 6-18 in 50 schools.
These Junior Field Officers are visiting schools, sharing about MakaPads, and forming clubs for boys and girls to talk about issues of sexual reproduction, health and hygiene, peer pressure, decision-making, drug abuse, relationships, stress management, and leadership. They are under the direct supervision of our Head Field Officer.
ZanaA is currently in 50 schools in Kibera serving just under 1,000 youth: 41 each week, in groups of 20, and another 9 each month similarly in groups of up to 20. Take a tour for yourself: http://www.worldnextdoor.org/2009/06/photo-gallery-zana-africa/
Moreover, we have distributed a second termly supply of sanitary pads to 176 girls from 5 schools and had wonderful information sessions with them about issues of health and sexuality. These youth have real questions, and are getting real answers often for the first time. See what this looks like: http://www.worldnextdoor.org/2009/07/photo-gallery-the-little-things/
