Time: 7:30 doors open, 8:30 performance and documentary
Cost: KES 800
Theme: Black, white and red

Goals: To launch ZanaAfrica in Kenya, and initiate the fundraising necessary to run the production, research and development, distribution, and establishment of national coordination of sanitary pads distribution for 2009. To gather people for a fun night of information and transformation, with an all-star musical cast. The guest artists' performances will be interwoven with a documentary to more effectively share the message of the challenge girls face and the solution that is within grasp. To start a fire within people in Nairobi as we grasp the reality that we individually really can solve this problem and give a chance to 120,000 girls to graduate primary and secondary school every year. To celebrate the power of Kenyans to be agents of their country's own development.

Report on the launch!!
For those of you who missed our launch, it set the bar for productions in Nairobi, from the elegant cocktail tables, candles and white lights to the presentation style. Emcees Gowi Odera and Mwendi Mbugua took us on a journey to share the struggles girls experience every month, brought home by a first-rate documentary made by Fiyuhworks, in short clips woven through a series of musical performances by Sara Mitaru, Rigga, Neema, Kanjii, and Aaron “Krucial” Rimbui, and spoken word by Sarah Mando. Eric Wainaina gave a wonderful performance as he helped us transition into dance mode to celebrate after a line of ushers in lesos and holding kiondos took pledge. DJ Moz kept us late into the night.

We had nearly 300 in attendance, and would have had more had the African heads of state not caused a complete traffic jam on Mombasa Road and other roads. Still, we were very pleased with the reception ZanaA received and as a newcomer to the Nairobi scene.

Thanks also go out individually to Muriithi Wanjau, Alvin, George on the deco, Florence for coordination, Julie for jump-starting this whole process, and our incredible board of directors and senior board of advisors.

What are we doing with this money?
This has enabled us to start a volunteer corp of Form Four Finishers (High School Graduates) from Kibera and Kawangware. ZanaA is mentoring these five youth, who are in turn mentoring Primary and Secondary school students. These Junior Field Officers are visiting schools, sharing about MakaPads, and forming clubs for boys and girls – called Smart Chillez and Smart Chaliz (sheng for "smart girls" and "smart guys") – to talk about issues of sexual reproduction and related issues, health and hygiene, peer pressure, decision-making, drug abuse, relationships, and stress management. They are under the direct supervision of our Head Field Officer, who we were able to hire on a partly-paid, partly-volunteer basis.

As of 20 February, they have visted 53 schools and begun Smart Chilles groups with 23 schools. Conversations have also been started with five women’s groups and fifteen clinics and chemists regarding sales of MakaPads to women.

Moreover, we have distributed a second termly supply to 176 girls from 5 schools and had wonderful information sessions with them about issues of health and sexuality. These youth have real questions, and need real answers.
